Here's the whole rap broken down into its component parts. Don't worry about memorizing the whole thing--just get a gist for the flow and type of information to include.
[The Ice-Breaker]
Who here likes the food in the dining halls on campus? Who loves it? Okay, who’d like to see more real food on campus? Great, well then you’re going to like what I have to say.
[The Who]
So, my name is [You] and I'm an organizer with the Real Food Challenge, a national initiative uniting students for a more just and sustainable food system. We're students on hundreds of campuses across the country, working to get more "real food" on campus and in our communities. That's food that truly nourishes ourselves, our communities, and the earth.
[The Crisis]
You've seen it in the news: whether it’s the growing diabetes epidemic, soaring food prices, slavery in the fields, or the accelerating degradation of our land, air, and water, all signs point to a food system in crisis. In a study done by The CDC found pesticides in 100% of the people who had both been blood and urine tested. The average person in this group carried a toxic cocktail of 13 of the 23 pesticides that were analyzed.any relevant (local) statistic Government and big business have failed to step up to the challenge, instead promoting business-as-usual.
[The Movement]
All across the country, students like you and me are creating local solutions to these global problems. Students are building gardens on their campuses and feeding their communities; they are protesting the abuses of farmworkers and demanding fair compensation for a hard day's work; they are working with their administrations to source local food in the dining halls and reduce their carbon "foodprint." Students—literally thousands of us on hundreds of campuses—are taking action for Real Food Now!
[The Solution]
We have an incredible opportunity, if we act together, to support best practices in how food is produced, handled, processed, distributed, and consumed. Here at WWU they spend [thousands/hundreds of thousands/millions] of dollars every year just to feed us! That’s money that we as students have direct control over if we get organized. So, we’re working to get western to take on the Real Food Challenge and provide 20% real food by 2012! If that happens, it’ll have a profound effect on producers, consumers, communities, and the earth. And it’ll make our food taste better too!
[The Action]
The best way for you to act is to come to our Film Feastival, table on vendors row, sign a petition or comment card with Students for Sustainable Food! With your help, we can realize our common goal of sustainability and good health on Western’s Campus!what ever event that is happening etc.
